When Should I Expand My Services?

Transcript of the When Should I Expand My Services? Video

Hey guys, welcome to Shama.TV! Today’s episode is another “Ask Shama.” So today’s question comes from William and he is looking to incorporate additional services with his current scope, and he’s wondering “am I trying to fit too much under one roof? And will it cause more confusion than actual demand for my services?” So that’s a good questions in terms of when is it time to expand your services, because the economy gets this way and people start to think “should I start offering more and develop a new strategy? Should I offer implementation?” And these are definitely things you want to think about. Now William’s question is really to the point when he says “How do I know if I’m trying to fit too much under one roof?” And the answer is really simple: you know if your clients aren’t asking for it. So for example, when I started Click to Client, we didn’t do any implementation. We are now a full-service web marketing firm. But when I first started clients would say “Hey you’ve told us all the stuff about how to make a great web site, but the web designer understands design but they don’t necessarily understand the marketing piece. So that was a natural progression for us to go that route. SO my answer to you, William, is to ask your clients. What are they telling you? Does it seem like you’re leaving them off at a point where you should leave them off? Obviously our clients needed more. We were cutting them off at a point where they needed more service, so that’s obviously something we had to consider and change. Now if you’re thinking of a completely different service that has nothing to do with what you’re currently doing, really just make sure that it works out with your brand. You want to make sure that you keep your brand equity and it matches across the board. So say if you are currently doing HR services and you suddenly want to add marketing, there is a bit of a disconnect there. But say you offer HR services and you want to add maybe training and development? Now that might work because you can still tie those two together and there are a lot of commonalities. So you want to look for services that are related. But really, ask your clients what they want because they will tell you exactly what they are looking for.
