Tips on Hiring Smart Interns

Transcript of the Tips on Hiring Smart Interns Video

Hey guys, welcome to Shama.TV! As you may know, my company, Click to Client, recently went through the process of finding an intern. We put a notice out there on our blog and we got lots and lots of applications from lots of very talented folks. I wanted to do this segment to give you some feedback when hiring your own interns. I this this applies across the board whether you’re hiring an intern or a full-time position, but these are just some things I’ve learned over time about when you hire and how to make smart hiring decisions. So I have three tips for you, and this is not my usual Social Media stuff, but I think it’s really, really important. So first is to make sure that expectations are clear from both ends. I think it can cause a lot of trouble when either the employer or the employee doesn’t fully put all of their expectations out on the table. The second tip is to do either a phone or a face-to-face interview. When you get a lot of applications, and you are just going through by email, it isn’t as effective as spending say 30 minutes with a person because you get a better idea of the kind of person that they are. So that’s my second tip, and most of you guys are probably doing that, but if you’re not, just remember never to hire without doing a full interview. My third tip is to do a week-long trial period. So let’s say you’re thinking about hiring an intern. Set one week where you’re just going to see how they perform, and if for either of you it isn’t a good fit, you just say bye at the end of the week and move on to the next candidate. I think this really helps. Of course, it does take up some resources from your end, and it is a week-long commitment from them, but one week is a perfect time frame to see if they are going to be a good fit for your business.
