Stephanie! You won a great thread with a great observation and you got the book — congrats!

I’m a personal chef, and all the time people ask me what I do, exactly. Most are not looking to hire me, but know someone who knows someone, etc. I never take their question as a cue to tell them all about my job, but — smile! — to tell them what I do, exactly, is to arrange for everyone I work for to painlessly lose 10 lbs, right off the bat. It helps that this IS what I do, of course, and I do get hired by people who’ve heard of me this way.

My best tip for standing out is my practice of putting the needs of my clients ahead of the almighty dollar. I often ‘give away’ great information and my clients rave that they’ve learned so much from me. I believe it’s also why my entire client base is built from word of mouth!

The ice breaker has got to be appreciation of the person, in context to a personal attribute and then gradually hitting on the key points that I would want to talk about. ALways enter a meeting with pointers, no one likes stories, crisp clear and to the point, but always start with a pleasantry to bring a comfort level in the topic.( The smile is just a means to the end)

@Sandie, LOL, your comment compelled me to comment. Same is the case with me. Whoever meets with me, he/she always says “you gotta nice smile” lol And when I smile people keep watching my face, it’s really gift of God. Thanks for such a nice gift lol

My smile gets me noticed. People are sensitive to a genuine smile and when they meet me they generally want to talk. Then genuine listening lets me understand what their needs are and how I might be able to help.
